FOUNDED 1966 BY THE GUEST FAMILY

1 August 1966. Michael and Anne Guest open the shop in half of the former White Swan, on Beverley Saturday Market.

The space had been a public house. Before that (per Karen Guest, in the Just Beverley anniversary feature) the site held the Bishop’s Palace of a Franciscan Friary. In 1966 Beverley was still a rural market town; the Wednesday livestock market brought farmers and their wives into town, and Michael Philips, as the shop was first named, opened into that rhythm.

Over the next 34 years three more properties were knocked through. Anne added the gift shop Design next door in 1975; the dry cleaner between them was acquired; in 2000 the former kebab shop at 25 Saturday Market completed the four-knock-through. Watches, gifts, jewellery and repairs each took a department.

Today the business is run by Michael and Anne’s children, Philip and Karen Guest. Philip leads the watch side and the brand relationships; Karen is the family’s diamond and antique specialist. Michael Guest holds an MBE for services to the community in Beverley, and an Honorary Freemanship of the town. He, Philip and Karen have all served as presidents of the Beverley and District Chamber of Trade.

“The objects we sell are usually given for special occasions or reasons, and so are invested with a great deal of sentiment.” , Karen Guest, hu17.net, 2011
1966 Michael and Anne Guest open the shop in one half of the former White Swan, on Beverley Saturday Market. Trading begins under the name Michael Philips on 1 August.
1975 Anne opens the adjacent gift shop Design. The two trading spaces sit either side of an old dry cleaner.
1990s Philip and Karen Guest join the business. The dry cleaner between the two shops is acquired and knocked through.
2000 Expansion into the kebab shop at 25 Saturday Market completes the four-knock-through. Separate departments emerge for watches, gifts, jewellery and repairs.
2010s Branches open in Cottingham, Driffield and Pocklington. Michael Guest is awarded an MBE for services to the community.
Today Philip and Karen run the business; Michael remains an Honorary Freeman of Beverley. Cartier shop-in-shop on Saturday Market. Sixty years on the same square.
ANTIQUE & VINTAGE · KAREN GUEST

The largest regional stockist for antique jewellery and vintage watches in East Yorkshire.

An antique 1.03ct diamond ring in a platinum single-stone setting, from the Guest and Philips antique room at 23-25 Saturday Market, Beverley.
ANTIQUE GUEST & PHILIPS · 1.03ct platinum single-stone

Sixty years of buying across East Yorkshire and beyond has given the Beverley antique room a depth of stock no other regional shop matches. Karen Guest, who joined the bench in the late 1980s, catalogues every piece personally.

The collection runs from Edwardian sapphire-and-pearl pendants and Victorian gold cluster rings through to 1970s Cartier Santos Galbée watches, stainless-steel Rolex Datejust II, antique Omega Constellation and pre-war Mappin chronographs. Periods covered: Georgian, Victorian, Edwardian, Art Deco, mid-century modernist. Every piece comes catalogued under the house Antique Guest and Philips line with period, gemstones, mount metal and reference number stated, not a generic vintage tag.

  • Pearls restrung in silk, knotted between each, the conservation standard not the fast standard.
  • Old claws re-tipped individually rather than the whole head replaced, preserving the original metalwork on period rings.
  • Antique watches set on Brand-service-centre time, with movement reports written up before sale.

FAQ · FIVE QUESTIONS WE GET MOST

Quick answers. Bring the piece in for the rest.

Do you really resize rings the same day?

For most simple resizes (one or two sizes up or down, plain bands or claw settings), yes. A customer dropped in a vintage Cartier in October 2025 at 11am and walked out at 1pm. Complex resizes (full eternity bands, antique settings, anything where the stones need re-tipping) take longer, usually 2 to 5 working days. Bring the ring in to Saturday Market and Karen or the bench team will tell you on the spot.

Are you authorised dealers for Cartier, Bremont, Omega?

Yes for all three, plus Longines, Tissot, Hamilton, Gucci and Seiko. The Cartier shop-in-shop is at the Beverley Saturday Market store. Bremont is confirmed on Bremont’s own store locator at bremont.com. All brand watches come with the manufacturer’s warranty, set up in our workshop, with battery-and-bracelet service handled in-house and full mechanical service routed to the right brand service centre.

Can you value pieces for insurance or probate?

Yes. Karen Guest handles antique and diamond valuations directly; she is the family’s diamond and antique specialist with 35 years at the bench. Insurance valuations are typically £75 per piece (fixed); probate valuations are £150 for the first piece and £50 each thereafter. We provide a written report with photographs, gemstone weights, and current replacement value. Appointment recommended for collections of more than a handful of pieces.

Do you take part-exchange or buy outright?

Yes to both. Karen and Philip see customers most days about part-exchange against new pieces and outright sale of inherited collections. Sixty years of trading means most pieces that come through our doors have either come from us originally or are pieces we know how to value. Bring the piece in to any of the four branches; if it is the kind of thing best valued by Karen, we arrange a quiet half-hour at the Beverley counter rather than over the till.

Why are there four branches and which one should I visit?

Beverley Saturday Market is the flagship, the antique room, the watch repair workshop and the Cartier shop-in-shop. Cottingham, Driffield and Pocklington are local market-town shops with the everyday lines (engagement rings, gifts, brand watches, battery service). If you are commissioning a piece, having a valuation done, or buying an antique, Beverley is the one to visit. For a watch battery or a gift, your nearest branch is fine.
